FAULTS & REPAIRS

Downlight and Lighting Repairs

Most lighting faults trace back to a handful of causes.

Send a photo of the fitting and describe the fault.

01

Flickering or buzzing

A dimmer not made for LEDs, mixed brands on one dimmer, or a failing driver.

02

A downlight has stopped working

Often the driver, which may be replaceable separately.

03

A sensor stays on

Water in the sensor head or a failed sensor may be the cause.

04

Lights trip the circuit

Moisture in an outdoor fitting or a damaged cable needs investigation.

DONE PROPERLY

Why Choose Newcastle Electrical for Your Lighting

Clear advice, careful work and a thorough handover.

Licensed and Certified Wiring

All lighting work is done by a licensed electrician and meets AS/NZS 3000 in full. The paperwork is in order if your insurer ever asks, or when the house goes on the market.

Price Agreed Before Work Starts

The quote is fixed once the layout is agreed, so there’s no hourly meter running while holes are cut. Decide to add another light on the day? It’s priced before it goes in, and the final bill matches what you approved.

Clean, Careful Work

Cutting into plaster creates fine dust, so furniture and floors are covered before work begins. Offcuts, packaging, and old fittings are taken away, and the room is vacuumed before you walk back in.

One Electrician, Start to Finish

There are no subcontractors or crews. The person who looks at your ceiling plans the layout, installs every light and answers your questions afterwards, and small jobs can often be fitted in the same day.

FROM FIRST CALL TO HANDOVER

How Your Lighting Job Works

Clear steps from your first enquiry to the completed work.

01

Photos or a Site Visit

Send photos of your room, ceiling and chosen fittings for a quote. Larger renovations and outdoor lighting projects receive a site visit.

02

Layout and Written Price

We agree on fittings, light positions, dimmers and switching, then provide a written price listing every light before you book.

03

Install, test and hand over

We protect floors, run cable and reuse suitable openings to minimise patching. Lights, switches, dimmers and sensors are tested, with a CCEW provided for new wiring.

Light Installation and Downlight Questions

Call or send your details if you have another question.

It depends on how many lights you need, whether you’re replacing existing downlights or adding new positions that need cable, how easy the roof space is to get into, and whether you’re supplying the fittings. Swapping halogens for LEDs in the same holes is the most affordable option. Photos of the ceiling are usually enough for a written quote.

If your downlights take a GU10 globe, yes. Switch off at the wall, let the globe cool, then push it in, twist a quarter turn and pull it out. Most newer LED downlights are integrated, with the light and fitting as one unit, so when one fails the whole fitting is replaced, and that’s a job for a licensed electrician.

As a rough guide, downlights under a standard 2.4 m ceiling are spaced 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart and about 600 mm in from the walls, so a 3 m by 3 m bedroom usually needs four. Kitchens and laundries need more for working light, while living areas often need fewer if you use lamps. The layout is worked out with you at the quote.

Most lighting jobs are finished in one visit. Swapping a handful of fittings on existing wiring is usually a morning’s work, and a whole-house halogen to LED changeover normally takes a day. New downlight positions, pendants or outdoor lights that need fresh cable take a little longer, mostly because of the cable runs through the roof.

Yes. Lights bought from a Newcastle lighting store or online are fine as long as they carry the RCM mark, which shows they’re approved for sale in Australia. If you can, send the model details before you buy, so the cutout size, IC rating, and dimmer compatibility are checked first.
