Light Switch Is Hot, Buzzing or Hissing: Is It an Emergency and What to Do Right Now

By a licensed Newcastle electrician6 min readUpdated 23 October 2026

A light switch that is hot, buzzing, crackling, or hissing is a warning, not a quirk. Turn that circuit off at the switchboard now and don’t use the switch again. If you smell burning, call 0450 406 450. Here is what is happening behind the plate.

Yes, treat it as urgent. A switch that is hot, buzzing, crackling, or hissing almost always means a connection behind the plate is arcing or overheating, or the switch itself is breaking down. That can start a fire inside the wall. Turn that circuit off, stop using the switch, and get it repaired. If there is a burning smell or you can’t isolate it, call an emergency electrician straight away.

“Do this now”

  • Turn off the lighting circuit for that room at the switchboard. If you can’t tell which one, and the board is dry and cool, turn off the main switch.
  • Don’t touch, flick or take the cover off the switch. Keep children away from it.
  • Call 0450 406 450, 24/7. If there is smoke or flame, get everyone out and call 000.

What Hissing or Buzzing Behind a Switch Usually Means

Arcing at a Loose or Worn Connection

Each switch has wires held in place by small screw terminals. Over years of use, heating and cooling, those terminals can loosen. When they do, electricity jumps across the gap. That jump is arcing. It’s what you hear as hissing, crackling, or a sharp buzz, and it creates intense heat right where the wires meet.

Arcing chars the plastic around the terminal and the insulation on the cable. Each time it happens, the connection gets worse. This is the most common cause of a hot or noisy switch, and it doesn’t settle down on its own.

A Failing Switch Mechanism

Switches wear out. The contacts inside can pit and burn until they no longer close cleanly. One enquiry described it exactly: a fan and light switch that “flicks back on and is hissing”. When a switch turns itself back on, or won’t stay in one position, the mechanism has broken down. The contacts are now arcing every time the switch moves, or even when it doesn’t.

An Overloaded or Mismatched Dimmer

Dimmers work differently to plain switches and are more likely to hum. A faint buzz from a dimmer running LED downlights often means the dimmer doesn’t suit the lights. That isn’t usually dangerous on its own, but a dimmer that gets hot, or is running more lights than it’s rated for, is overloaded. If yours buzzes with new LEDs, this guide to matching dimmers to LED downlights explains why.

Warm vs Hot: Which Is Normal?

Not every warm switch is a fault. Here is how to tell the difference.

What you noticeNormal?What to do
A dimmer that’s slightly warm to the touchUsually. Many dimmers give off a little heat by designKeep an eye on it. If it gets hotter or starts to buzz, have it checked
A plain on/off switch that feels warmNoTurn that circuit off and book a repair
A plate that’s hot, discoloured or smellsNoTurn the circuit off now and call
A faint hum from a dimmer with LED lightsCommon, but a sign of a mismatchHave the dimmer matched to the lights
Hissing, crackling or visible sparksNoTurn the circuit off now and call

A simple test: if you can’t comfortably rest the back of your hand on the plate, it’s hot. Brown or yellow marks on a white plate mean it has been hot for a while.

Is It Safe to Leave Until Morning?

Sometimes. If you’ve turned that circuit off at the switchboard, the switch is cooling down, and there’s no smell, smoke, or noise, the fault is isolated. It can usually wait for a booked visit the next day.

Don’t wait if any of these apply:

  • You can’t work out which circuit to turn off, and the switch is still live.
  • The burning smell continues after the circuit is off.
  • The plate is scorched, melted, or the wall around it is warm.
  • The same circuit runs something you can’t be without overnight, such as medical equipment.

In any of those cases, call an emergency electrician tonight.

Why Turning the Main Switch Off Is a Stopgap, Not a Fix

Turning off the main switch is the right call when you can’t find the right circuit. It takes the power off the faulty switch, which stops the arcing. But it also turns off your fridge, freezer, hot water, and everything else.

It doesn’t fix anything either. The damaged connection is still there. The moment the power goes back on, the switch is live again, and the arcing can start again. If you can, find the lighting circuit for that room and turn off just that one, so the rest of the house keeps running until the switch is repaired.

“What Not to Do”

  • Don’t keep flicking the switch to see if it still works.
  • Don’t tape the switch in one position and carry on using the lights.
  • Don’t unscrew the plate to look behind it. Everything behind it can still be live.
  • Don’t turn the circuit back on just to check if the noise has stopped.

What the Repair Involves

Switches are part of the fixed wiring, so replacing one is licensed work. The NSW Government is clear that homeowners should never install, replace or move switches themselves.

With the circuit isolated, I remove the plate and check the terminals, the switch mechanism, and the cable feeding it. The switch or dimmer is replaced. Any cable that has been cooked by the heat is cut back to sound wire or replaced, because a new switch on damaged wire just moves the problem. If the heat has spread into the wall or ceiling, that circuit is tested further, the same way as any electrical fault-finding job. Everything is tested before the power goes back on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a buzzing light switch dangerous?

It can be. A buzz from a plain switch usually means a loose connection is arcing, which creates heat and can start a fire. Turn that circuit off and have it repaired. A faint hum from a dimmer running LEDs is often a mismatch rather than a hazard, but it still needs checking if the dimmer gets hot.

Why is my dimmer switch warm?

Many dimmers run slightly warm because they shed a little heat while they work. Warm is normal; hot isn’t. If you can’t comfortably rest your hand on it, or it’s buzzing or discoloured, turn the circuit off and have it checked.

Why does my light switch keep switching back on?

The mechanism inside the switch has worn out and can no longer hold its position. Worn contacts often arc, so if it’s also hissing or warm, turn that circuit off and have the switch replaced.

Can a hot light switch cause a fire?

Yes. Heat from a loose or arcing connection can char the insulation and the materials around the switch inside the wall. That’s why a hot switch should be isolated straight away rather than watched.

Can I replace a light switch myself in NSW?

No. Light switches are fixed wiring, and the NSW Government says homeowners should never install, replace, or move switches. It’s licensed electrical work.

Isolate It First, Then Get It Fixed

A hot or hissing switch is one of those faults that’s easy to ignore and expensive to regret. Turn the circuit off, leave the switch alone, and have it repaired. If there’s a burning smell or you can’t isolate it in your Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, or Maitland home, call 0450 406 450, day or night.
