The NBN box ended up in the laundry, or a wall socket got torn out when the furniture moved. Either way, you’re not stuck with it. Some of that equipment belongs to NBN, and some is your home’s own cabling, and who can move it depends on which part it is.
Often, yes, as long as they’re also a registered cabler. On fixed-line NBN (fibre to the premises, HFC cable, fibre to the curb and fibre to the node), a registered cabler can move the connection box or the wall socket inside the house under NBN’s Authority to Alter guidelines. Anything mounted outside, and all fixed wireless and satellite equipment, is moved by NBN after an application. Often the simpler fix is to leave the box where it is and run data cabling to the room you need.
What Is NBN’s Equipment and What Is Your Home’s Cabling
NBN supplies the equipment that brings the network into your home: the box on the outside wall, the connection box inside, the roof antenna or dish. It’s labelled as NBN’s property and stays with the house. Your modem or router, and any cabling run from it to other rooms, is yours.
Which pieces you have depends on your connection type. Fibre to the curb and fibre to the node often have no NBN box at all, just the phone wall socket the modem plugs into.
Moving the Connection Box: What NBN Handles and What a Cabler Can Do
NBN’s own guidance on relocating its equipment splits the work by where it sits and which technology you have. For fixed-line connections, changes inside the home can be done by a registered cabler, and NBN says the work must meet its standards. That covers moving the box or socket to another wall or room and extending the cable to reach it.
Anything outside the building is NBN’s job. Moving the utility box, the lead-in, an antenna or a pit goes through NBN’s Relocation Works application, and NBN works out the cost with you. Fixed wireless and satellite equipment can’t be moved by a cabler at all, inside or out.
The Cameron Park enquiry in February was a typical one: the connection point was in a spare room and the owners wanted it in the study. That’s an inside move on a fixed-line service, so it’s a cabler’s job, not NBN’s.
“What Not to Do”
- Don’t unscrew, open or remove NBN’s equipment yourself, even to move it a metre.
- Don’t cut or join the cable going into the NBN box or the phone wall socket.
- Don’t take the NBN box with you when you move. NBN says it must stay at the address.
- Don’t pay a handyman to move it. If they’re not a registered cabler, it isn’t allowed.
Extending Data to Another Room Is Often the Easier Fix
Ask whether the box really needs to move, or whether the internet just needs to reach another room. Usually it’s the second.
Leave the NBN box where it is and run a Cat6 cable from beside it to the study, the lounge or a central spot in the ceiling. The modem can then sit wherever suits you. It’s usually less work than moving the box, and nothing of NBN’s is touched. If you’re already getting slow speeds at an existing socket, read why internet is fast at the modem but slow at your desk first.

Damaged or Ripped-Out Wall Socket: What to Do First
A September enquiry from Highfields was blunt: “internet wall socket ripped off, NBN down”. If that’s you, work out what was damaged before you call anyone.
- If NBN’s connection box or the cable going into it is damaged, contact your phone and internet provider. They deal with NBN for you.
- If it’s the phone wall socket or a data socket inside the house, a registered cabler can repair or replace it.
- Leave loose wires alone and don’t push the plate back on with the wires bunched behind it.
- If a power point was pulled out with it, switch that circuit off at the switchboard and have it looked at too.
Planning It During a Renovation
A renovation is the cheapest time to put the NBN box where it belongs. Decide where the modem will live before the walls are lined.
- Pick a central spot near a power point, with some airflow.
- Run spare data cables and a conduit while the frame is open.
- If the outside wall carrying NBN’s box is coming down, or the house is being knocked down, apply to NBN early.
- If you rent, get the landlord’s approval before any NBN equipment is moved.
What Affects the Cost and Time
There’s no single price, because every house is different. What makes the difference:
- Your connection type, which decides whether a cabler can do it or it goes to NBN.
- How far the box is moving, and whether the cable runs through the ceiling or under the floor.
- Brick walls, two-storey homes and tight roof spaces, which all take longer.
- Whether the new spot needs a power point, which a licensed electrician can fit on the same visit.
- Any charge from NBN, if the work is on its side. NBN sets that once it has your application.
A straightforward inside move or a single new data run is usually done in a visit. Work that needs NBN takes as long as its process does.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move my NBN box myself?
No. NBN asks people not to remove or relocate its equipment themselves. On fixed-line connections, inside moves are done by a registered cabler; everything else is done by NBN.
Who do I call to move the NBN connection box?
If it’s inside the house on fibre to the premises, HFC, fibre to the curb or fibre to the node, call a registered cabler. If it’s outside, or you have fixed wireless or satellite, apply to NBN.
Does NBN charge to move its equipment?
NBN says there are costs involved in any relocation or removal, and its Relocation Works team tells you the cost after you apply. A cabler charges for their own work when they do an inside move.
Can I take the NBN box when I move house?
No. The connection box and its cables have to stay at the address. Take your own modem or router with you.
What should I do if the internet wall socket has been ripped off?
If NBN’s box or its cable is damaged, contact your provider. If it’s a socket or cabling inside the house, a registered cabler can repair it.
